The Incredible Papuan Garden Eel

How can they go unnoticed? These little guys make the ocean bed look ‘hairy’ but in fact, the Papuan Garden Eel (also known as Heteroconger mercyae or Mercy’s Garden Eel) was only discovered in these waters in the year 2009.

It differs from other members of the genus by its distinct colour pattern, consisting of zebra-like black and white barring on the head, grading to a complex black and white maze pattern on the body.

They spend most of their time hiding their small bodies, up to 60cm long, in the sand.
