The British leg of the annual Ocean Film Festival World Tour kicks off in Leeds on 12 September and will make its way around the country until November.
This 11th tour brings more than two hours’ worth of ocean-themed films to big screens and is presented by the Marine Conservation Society and PADI. The concept originated in Australia “to inspire people to enjoy, explore and protect our oceans”.
The six films are introduced by a compère, and each screening includes a free prize giveaway. Although billed as a UK tour, the venues are mainly around England, the exceptions being Edinburgh, Swansea and Llandudno. The line-up of films is headed by one that at 62 minutes is longer than usual for the festival:
ICE MAIDEN features adventurer Lisa Blair embarking on a voyage to become the first woman to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Antarctica but finding herself confronted by unexpected, life-threatening weather conditions.
THE CALL (12min) Hawaiian photographer and surfer Mike Coots suffered a harrowing shark attack at 18 but has become a passionate shark-conservation advocate.
METROPOLIS (14min) From the morning rituals of the emperor angelfish to the nocturnal hunts of the wunderpus, a journey into life on a coral reef.
CALL OF THE COLD (11min) Three athletes embark on a multi-sport adventure in Iceland that takes in surfing, iceberg-climbing and freediving, chasing the “fine line between frozen and liquid water”.
THE WHALE SONG (18min) looks at how humpback whales remix each other's tunes, passing melodies around the world’s oceans, while DJ Sam Feldt transforms whale songs into human beats.
TESS FELIX: PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST (6min) is about a California-based artist who uses plastics debris to create mosaic portraits.
