Let’s Hear it From the Seahorse’s Mouth a Macro Spotters Point Of View

Spotting involves searching for specific species during muck or reef dives to show guests the critters they’re eager to see, whether or not they have a camera. However, spotting is no longer just about pointing out interesting subjects. This is where the role of a Photographer Specialty Spotter has emerged in underwater photography.

This multitasking skill of both spotting and assisting underwater photographers in capturing their desired shots offers like-minded macro enthusiasts an opportunity to enhance their photographic perspectives. Specialist Spotters ensure photographers can capture critters in ideal positions with aesthetic backgrounds, all while prioritizing the safety of the diver and the environment. Additionally, these spotters bring valuable knowledge of lighting and photography assistance to help nail the perfect shot.

Analynne Sison, who won both Best Spotter and 1st place for the best macro subject she spotted herself, explains that her success comes from a passion for fresh perspectives. “One has to read macro books, consult with marine biologists to learn about the best behaviors of marine animals,” she says. These practices allow her to capture moments that aren’t easily seen by the naked eye.

Adrian of Aivymaes shares, “Spotting is special because it’s like hunting for me. I don’t know what I’ll encounter, whether it’s a commonly seen critter or a rare species. It gives me the thrill of the hunt. And if I manage to find what the guest is looking for, then it gives me joy seeing their satisfied reactions.”

Ricky from Azure emphasizes that patience and respect for marine life are key to capturing the best marine behavior moments, even if it takes hours or several dives to achieve the winning shot.

Silver Reef Dive Resort hosts a specialist spotter training and competition photography workshop conducted by Dennis Corpuz, an award-winning and widely published photographer, every June. This workshop, now in its second year, enhances the education and experience of both photographers and spotters, giving them a competitive edge.
