UK conservation body the Reef-World Foundation is putting a windfall to effective use by mounting a UK-wide campaign on digital promotional screens to raise awareness of the importance of protecting coral reefs.

The foundation is co-ordinator of the UN Environment Programme’s Green Fins initiative, which focuses on driving environmentally friendly scuba diving and snorkelling practices across the industry globally. Earlier this year it became one of six charities to win access to Ocean Outdoor’s annual Drops In The Ocean environmental fund.

Each year Ocean Outdoor, a digital promotional screen facilitator, donates 2% of its reported revenue to environmental charities as part of its sustainability mission. The value to Reef-World is estimated to be the equivalent of £335,000.

The charity is now using the screens across the UK to amplify its message to a wider audience, says Reef-World. The aim of the visuals is to showcase the beauty and fragility of coral reefs while demonstrating their strong connection to the viewer.

“Every second breath we take comes from the ocean and coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea,” says Reef-World executive director Chloe Harvey.

“They provide a critical habitat for countless marine species, directly impacting the health of our ocean and planet and providing us with vital resources for survival, including the air we breathe.”

The commercials tie in with information about sustainable practices to protect coral reefs and opportunities to support Reef-World’s global marine-conservation efforts on the foundation’s website. Follow Reef-World on Facebook,  X, Instagram or LinkedIn.
