We often get asked when the best time to visit Raja Ampat is—the simple answer: All Year.
Raja Ampat, a diver’s paradise, offers year-round opportunities for underwater exploration. This remote archipelago in Indonesia is famed for its astonishing marine biodiversity. It has a rainbow of colourful coral reefs, aquatic life, and dive sites catering to all experience levels. But what makes Raja Ampat unique is its consistent diving conditions, allowing enthusiasts to explore its underwater treasures throughout the year.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Raja Ampat is that you can dive here all year round. The region's equatorial location ensures a warm, tropical climate, with air temperatures typically ranging between 30°C to 35°C year-round. The water temperatures are equally inviting, usually hovering around 29°C, making it perfect for diving in a 3mm wetsuit.
Raja Ampat has two seasons. It's Manta Ray season from October to April, and from May to September, it's shark season.
During the May to September period, there can be more rain, usually at night or early in the morning, but the days are generally clear for diving. However, as Raja Ampat has a tropical climate, it experiences rain throughout the year. The underwater visibility remains consistently excellent, typically between 10 to 30 meters, regardless of the season.
Raja Ampat’s marine life is nothing short of spectacular. The nutrient-rich waters, fed by strong currents, sustain an incredible variety of species, ensuring that no matter when you dive, there’s always something extraordinary to see.
Large schools of fish, such as Barracuda, Jacks, Trevallies, Tuna, and Bumphead Parrotfish, are common in these waters. You might also encounter Wobbegong sharks, Black and White-tip Reef Sharks, Sweetlips, Mobula Rays, Eagle Rays, and the impressive Maori Wrasse. These creatures are not just a seasonal occurrence but can be seen throughout the year, making every dive an adventure.
In addition to the larger marine life, Raja Ampat is teeming with smaller fish and critters. Hundreds of small schools of fish like Fusiliers, Triggerfish, Snappers, Angelfish, and other colourful reef dwellers fill the vibrant coral gardens. For those who enjoy macro photography, the area is a treasure trove of critters such as crabs, lobsters, Mantis Shrimp, Nudibranchs, Eels, Pygmy Seahorses, Starfish, Flatworms, Sea Cucumbers, Squid, and Giant Cuttlefish. The diversity of these smaller creatures adds to the richness of the diving experience in Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat’s consistent weather and ocean conditions make it a true year-round diving destination. Whether you're drawn to the vibrant coral reefs, the large schools of fish, or the fascinating macro life, there’s always something to discover beneath the waves. So, pack your gear and dive into the wonders of Raja Ampat, no matter the time of year.
